OxVeg Online News, 7/12/2008

Dear Member, Over the past few weeks our secretary Heather Shepherd has been working hard to create a new, more attractive and informative website for OxVeg. The results of her efforts can be found at www.oxveg.co.uk . The index page of our old website (www.ivu.org/oxveg/index.html) still exists although it simply redirects the reader to the new site. Most of the other pages have been transferred to the new site. OxVeg will remain a member society of the International Vegetarian Union, who have hosted our website since its inception, to support their work promoting the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle worldwide. Heather writes: We're just back from the Campaign for Climate Change, where we have been enlightening the public about the environmental benefits of being veg*n (animal farming contributes 18% of greenhouse gases, compared to 13.5% from the whole world's transport). Last weekend again saw us in London for Animal Aid's Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre, where I bought lots of ethical gifts, and tasted some delicious food from Scheese and Redwoods. Coming up we have the OxVeg Christmas dinner and stalls at the Green Fayre and Cowley Road Christmas Market. We still need your favourite recipes for Christmas Day, be it a nut roast, or delicious alternative to encourage people to forgo the Turkey this Christmas. We have also launched our new website at www.oxveg.co.uk, so do check it out (all event details are there), and give us suggestions on where is good to eat in Oxford, or events that you would like to see organised. To access the members-only area of the website, you will need the following credentials: Username: member Password: oxveggie Bye for now, Heather (The username and password for the members-only area of the website are given in confidence and must not be divulged to anyone else. Either or both may be changed to ensure that the members-only area is, indeed, exclusive to members of OxVeg. Changes will be notified via OxVeg Online News.) ====================================================== FORTHCOMING EVENTS (* denotes events organised by OxVeg) Saturday 13 December, 10.30am-4pm. Its recommendations include: "encouragement of a switch from intensive livestock production to extensive sustainable systems" and recognition that "total meat consumption also needs to be reduced in particular in industrialised countries." See www.ciwf.org for more details. Meanwhile, CIWF have created a 4-minute YouTube video on livestock and the environment as part of an international Greenpeace campaign to highlight the urgency of action on climate change. You can view the video (essentially clips from a video produced for CIWF's Eat Less Meat campaign) at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cvCoWh77w1s ====================================================== And finally ...
