EDM 569, in support of the Safety of Medicines (Evaluation) Bill 2009, was recently tabled by Ian Gibson MP. It calls for a proper scientific comparison of animal and human-based testing methods. You can ask your MP to sign it here: http://www.writetothem.com/. Just enter your postcode, select your MP's name, then you can send them a message. You can read more about the Bill on the Safer Medicines Campaign website : http://www.curedisease.net/safetyofmedicines/index.shtml. The RSPCA are running a campaign in support of EC directive 86/609 on animal testing. You can find further details and sign the petition at http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RSPCA/RSPCARedirect&pg=directive86609 ====================================================== Vegan Camp 2009 The 29th consecutive annual vegan camp will be held at Monkey Tree Holiday Park, Rejerrah, Newquay, Cornwall TR8 5QR, from Saturday 1 to Saturday 15 August. Campers will be welcome for any period within the fortnight. There are some caravans to let weekly on site but early enquiries are essential. They sell out quickly and the site will be full in August. Everyone *must* be vegan on site but all are welcome whether vegan or not. At least 100 people are expected to attend, perhaps more since the last two years' events have attracted more than 130 each. Activities are organized throughout the fortnight. All ages are welcome: many children attend and about 35% of campers are under 18. Campers are self-catering but there will be the usual supplies of vegan savouries four times in the fortnight and there are two communal meals per week where we all make or bring something to share. We have our own shop for essentials on site and supplies can be ordered in advance. Please e-mail Gordon Forrest - Protected email address - for booking forms, costs and information, or Daniel Strettle - Protected email address - for all caravan, campsite and booking enquiries. Please do not contact the site owners since all bookings are organized centrally by Daniel, Gordon and the vegan camp committee, but you are welcome to check out their website at www.monkeytreeholidaypark.co.uk. ====================================================== Off the Hoof Off the Hoof is a new quarterly magazine "with a focus on the best of the veggie vegan lifestyle". Published by Yaoh, organisers of the hugely successful Bristol Vegan Fayre, the first issue, priced at £3-95 including postage, is available now (a 4-issue subscription costs £15 including postage). Further details from www.yaoh.co.uk and www.offthehoof.co.uk .) We have been sent 10 complimentary copies of each of issues 1 and 2. If you would like a copy, these will be available (while stocks last) at the OxVeg cookery demo on 8th March (see above for details), or copies can be posted for a £1 post and package fee. Contact Heather at Protected email address to reserve your copy. ====================================================== Review of Vegetarian Visitor 2009 edited by Annemarie Weitzel, Jon Carpenter, 112pp, pbk; ISBN 978-1-906067-04-5, £2-50 Vegetarian Visitor is an annual guide "listing private houses, guest houses, hotels, cafés, restaurants and pubs which take catering for vegetarians and vegans seriously". The 2009 edition follows the well-established format of previous editions, with most establishments having a brief entry (often no more than two lines), sometimes with a short description or accompanying advertisement. After a short introduction explaining how to use the guide and a section listing activity holidays the guide is arranged geographically by region, starting with London and Middlesex, and ending with Wales and Scotland. A further information section lists national and local vegetarian groups. Vegetarian Visitor is largely aimed at visitors from overseas. Indeed, many copies are distributed free of charge through Visit Britain offices abroad. Not surprisingly, therefore, considerably more space is devoted to popular tourist destinations such as the West Country than to less glamorous regions such as the Thames and Chilterns, which is covered in just two pages with only eating places listed. There are some obvious omissions here, including Oxford's best known vegetarian eating place, The Magic Café (apparently the new proprietors declined the offer of a free entry in the guide!). However, Vegetarian Visitor does not claim to be comprehensive, indeed for a mere £2-50 you can hardly expect it to be, and readers seeking a more detailed (but considerably more expensive) guide to veggie-friendly establishments in Britain should seek out a copy of Vegetarian Guides' Vegetarian Britain, the next edition of which is scheduled for publication in April 2009. However, if you're simply looking for a brief, pocket-sized guide to vegetarian-friendly holiday accommodation in Great Britain Vegetarian Visitor represents good value for money.
