OxVeg Online News, 4/4/2009

Dear Member, Last month, we ran a cookery workshop in Oxford. Unfortunately, possibly due to the rain, the turn-out was low, although we did bake cupcakes to hand out on the street, and a few passers-by dropped in to pick up some leaflets, and try the delicious juices that Paul Freestone made. This month's highlights include a chocolate making workshop, and the Dining Out Club will be going Italian. The results, based on data from 52,700 participants in the EPIC-Oxford study, showed that both vegetarians and fish-eaters (who ate fish but not meat) had a lower cancer incidence rate than meat-eaters (the rates were lower by about 10% and 15%, respectively). The differences did not appear to be specific to any of the common cancers, and, paradoxically, the vegetarian participants had a higher bowel cancer incidence rate than the meat-eaters. This result was particular surprising as previous studies have suggested that a high intake of red and processed meat is associated with an increased risk for this disease. Cancer incidence rates in the study population as a whole were about half those of the population of England & Wales, reflecting the health-conscious nature of the study group, including a very low incidence of smoking. ====================================================== Recycle Your Old Phone and Raise Money For Viva! In the current economic climate, we have kept our rates as low as possible. - My aim has always been that guests should return from holiday feeling well. To this end, as well as healthy food, I introduced optional yoga classes. Now, all our UK holidays have optional yoga. Yoga weeks also feature strongly in our 2009 Turkey programme. Classes are accessible to everyone. If you are new to yoga, they offer a gentle introduction and a way to remain fit on holiday. - We are often asked, 'Is it ok to come on my own?' The answer is YES. On average 70% of our guests are individuals travelling solo. Meeting new people from all walks of life is part of the excitement of VegiVentures. Of course it's also fine to go as a couple, or with friends. Easter is nearly here! We have some space still on our two great walking holidays: 'The Lycian Way' 6 - 13 April in Turkey and 'Spring in Snowdonia' 9 - 13 April in Wales." For full details of VegiVentures holidays go to www.vegiventures.com ====================================================== And finally ... I would like to record my thanks to OxVeg members Marilyn Burt and Mary Puffett who chose to recognise my 25 years as group secretary by presenting me with a tie in March. Although I continue to serve on the OxVeg committee I feel that the time is now right for me to leave most aspects of the running of the group to others. Accordingly, this will be my last issue as editor of OxVeg Online News, for the time being at least. Please continue to send your contributions to the new editor - Heather Shepherd - at the email address below. Best wishes, Paul Appleby Editor - OxVeg Online News (OxVeg Online News is published on the first Sunday of the month and we welcome contributions from members.
