Pancakes Galore!
This year's Shrove Tuesday saw OxVeg volunteers set up a stall on Cornmarket street to cook pancakes for shoppers, students, tourists and workers on lunchbreaks.
We arrived at 11.30am on Oxford's main shopping street, and set up our stall. We were cooking pancakes continously throughout the day, and at 3.30, we finally ran out of batter (6 pints of it, that is!). In all, we cooked and flipped an estimated 80 pancakes, and had many interesting discussions about vegetarianism and veganism as people watched us fry. We also had stacks of information and recipe leaflets, which nearly all ran out by the end of the day.
The theme for the event was encouraging people to try the vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for a limited time, e.g. Lent, and we received many comments from people who were willing to attempt the change. The pancakes were vegan and gluten-free to be enjoyed by as many people as possible (see our recipe). They were served with the traditional lemon and sugar, or with the delicious chocolate spread kindly donated by Nibchoc. Thank you to our volunteers who helped on the day - Rachel Foster, Paul Freestone, David Huish, Heather Shepherd, and Albert. And thank you to all who stopped by to chat. We hope to see you at an event soon. For those wanting some cooking tips for veggie cooking, we are running a cookery demonstration on Sunday, 8th March. Please visit the event's page for more details.
